In recent weeks, the scientific journal Mediterranean Marine Science published an article detailing one of the most significant achievements by researchers at LIFE Pinna: after successfully achieving fertilization of Pinna nobilis, biologists from the University of Genoa were able to extend larval development to 21 days in the Camogli laboratory, reaching the initial umbonate larval stage with a shell 150 microns long—a size never before achieved for this species. The article, titled “Advancements in controlled reproduction of the endangered species Pinna nobilis, comparing spontaneous and controlled fertilization on the larval development”, is the result of a joint effort by all project partners and also describes the other phases of the project, from sampling to the transport of the specimens used, from laboratory maintenance to molecular diagnostic analyses of pathogens.
