Geographically, the project LIFE PINNA covers four Italian regions (Liguria, Sardinia, Friuli-Venezia Giulia and Tuscany) and one Slovenian (the Kars Coast or Olbano-kraska). The intervention sites include the Marine Protected Areas of Asinara, Miramare, Strunjan, which belong to the Natura 2000 Network for the conservation of biodiversity in Europe and the Regional Marine Protected Area of Capo Mortola. These areas at least until 2018, before the deadly epidemic broke out, had well-structured populations of Pinna nobilis. Moreover the project will implement replication actions in the natural conservation area of Bergeggi Island and in the Arcipelago Toscano National Park.
