Experts in the Lagoon: the Pinna nobilis task force workshop

A workshop for Pinna nobilis experts from across the Mediterranean took place in the Venice Lagoon from April 14 to 16. This workshop is the core of a task force of researchers who, in the coming years, will aim to foster knowledge exchange and to strengthen coordination among ongoing initiatives for the conservation of Pinna nobilis, with a particular focus on ex situ conservation and management in lagoon systems. The workshop, organized by University of Rome Tor Vergata, UNEP-MAP-SPA/RAC, FAO-GFCM, Senckenberg University and IUCN Med, also included researchers from the Miramare MPA and those from Shoreline and the University of Genoa, LIFE Pinna partners. In addition to discussions on methodologies and operational challenges, a practical laboratory session was held at the field unit of the Laboratory of Experimental Ecology and Aquaculture in the Venice Lagoon (University of Rome Tor Vergata). Participants then had the opportunity to explore transitional environments and their unique functioning, including local management models such as Venice Valli.
