The first transplant in Slovenia

At the Marine Biology Station of Piran, part of the NIB (National Institute of Biology), activities for monitoring and protecting Pinna nobilis continue as part of the LIFE Pinna project. Recently, one of the small bivalves, discovered on the researchers’ larval collectors between the end of 2023 and the beginning of 2024, reached the appropriate size and was transplanted into the sea. The young Pinna nobilis had spent the winter in the aquariums at the Marine Biology Station, where it was “cared for” and monitored, growing from 2 to 7 centimeters. It was then transferred to the sea in a lanternet, a protected structure suspended on the seabed. There, it grew to 10 centimeters, the suitable size for transplant. The bivalve, now transferred into the sediment, is protected by a small cage and is periodically monitored by NIB divers.
